Standing on a real bungee platform is a full-body negotiation. Your rational mind may have paid for the ticket weeks ago; your nervous system discovers the void only when the harness clicks shut. That is why VR and simulator training are gaining traction among first-timers and nervous second-timers: not as a replacement for freefall, but as a dress rehearsal for everything that happens before freefall begins.[1][2]
Think of a bungee jump as a short play with a violent third act. The first acts - check-in, weighing, briefing, harness fit, the walk to the edge, the countdown - are learnable. Simulators excel at those acts. The third act remains reserved for gravity.

What a useful VR bungee session actually covers
A strong VR preview is not a roller-coaster app with a bungee skin. It walks you through the same sequence a reputable operator uses on site: how you will be weighed and matched to equipment, where staff will stand, how the ankle or body harness feels in concept, what the “ready” posture looks like, and how long the freefall might last at a given height.[1][4]
Some programs add exposure-therapy style grading: first a view from the platform with a solid rail in sight, then a lean over the edge, then a virtual step. People with height anxiety often benefit more from this staged approach than from a single shock clip of freefall. The goal is to teach your brain that the environment is structured, not chaotic.[2]
Physical simulators and “soft” rehearsal
Beyond headsets, adventure parks sometimes offer reverse-bungee rides, trampoline bungee, or indoor freefall tunnels that share only a fraction of true bungy physics. They still help. Anything that lets you practice trust in a harness, eye contact with a coach, and the habit of listening for a countdown reduces novelty on jump day. Novelty is expensive when it arrives all at once at the edge of a bridge.
What simulators cannot teach is the exact stretch profile of a commercial cord, the rebound oscillations, or the recovery boat or winch procedure of a specific site. Those remain the operator’s domain and a reason to choose crews with transparent procedures over bargain platforms with vague promises.[3]
How to use VR the week before you jump
Schedule a short VR session two to seven days before the real jump if you can. Immediately afterward, write three notes: what surprised you, what felt manageable, and what question you still need answered by staff. Bring those questions to the real briefing. Good operators welcome them; medical and equipment disclosures exist precisely because honesty keeps people safer.[1][3]
Pair the headset work with ordinary preparation: sleep, hydration, a light meal, clothing that works with a harness, and a plan for who holds your phone so you are not juggling logistics on the platform. Fear loves clutter. Reduce clutter and the remaining fear has a cleaner job - simply facing the drop.
When VR is the wrong tool
If virtual freefall leaves you nauseated, dizzy, or more anxious than before, stop. Simulator sickness is real, and a bad session can prime dread instead of confidence. Some people prepare better by watching operator-produced briefing videos filmed on the actual platform, or by talking through the sequence with a friend who has jumped the same site.
VR is also not a medical clearance. Heart conditions, recent injuries, pregnancy, uncontrolled epilepsy, and other red-flag issues still require real medical advice and operator policy - not a successful headset run.[1]
The bridge between pixels and air
On jump day, treat the real briefing as the only briefing that counts. Confirm harness type, cord selection logic, and abort rules. Ask how the crew handles a freeze on the platform. Listen more than you perform. Then, when the countdown starts, let the rehearsal do its quiet work: feet position, arms, eyes on the horizon, breath on a rhythm you already practiced in a safer room.[2][4]
Simulators will keep improving. The honest ones will never claim they are the jump. They will claim something more useful: that courage can be trained in layers, and that the first layer does not have to happen with a river two hundred meters below your shoes.
One underrated benefit of simulator training is shared vocabulary with the crew. When you already know what “ankle wrap,” “body harness,” or “look at the horizon” means, you spend less cognitive budget decoding jargon on the platform. That freed attention can go toward breathing and commitment. Couples and friend groups can train together the night before, then use the same phrases as a private checklist while waiting in line.
Finally, treat VR as a tool with an off switch. Two short sessions beat one long nausea marathon. If the real site offers its own orientation video filmed on the actual deck, watch that too - location-specific cues always outrank generic freefall animations when the day arrives.
