Bungee vs Paragliding: Fear Profiles Compared

Prep

Both involve height and leaving solid ground. The kinship mostly ends there.

Bungee packs terror and relief into a handful of elastic seconds under a crew’s system.[1] Paragliding — even a short tandem — stretches attention across launch, flight, weather, and landing, with a wing someone has to fly.[2]

Time scale of the fear

Bungee fear peaks at the edge and freefall, then shifts fast through catch and rebound. Intense and brief.

Paragliding fear can hum for minutes to hours: wind on launch, ridge proximity, the long permission of being aloft. If your nervous system hates short spikes, one sport may still suit you when the other does not.[3]

Control and trust

Commercial bungy: you trust equipment and process more than your own aerial skill. Controllables are honesty, listening, and a clean exit.[1][4]

Paragliding: even tandem, you inhabit a craft that responds to air. Progressive pilots take on real steering and judgment. People who fear “I might mess up the skill” often fear paragliding more. People who fear “I have to step off on purpose” often fear bungy more.[2]

Training and weather

Bungee is a same-day brief for most tourists. Paragliding tandem is also briefed, but the activity lives and dies on wind and site conditions in a more obvious way. Expect weather holds on both. Do not treat either as guaranteed on a fixed Instagram schedule.

Medical exclusions still apply — heart issues, recent injuries, pregnancy, and operator-specific lists. Disclose.[4]

Which fear are you booking

Book bungy if you want a short commitment test with professional rope systems. Book tandem paragliding if you want longer airtime and can tolerate shared control of a wing. Book neither as therapy for a phobia wrecking daily life — that is a clinician problem.

Bottom line: short edge spike versus longer sky responsibility. Match the fear profile, not the scenic postcard.
